VERY DEMURE

Word of the week:

Be very demure. Very mindful. Very cutesy.

“Demure",”Demureness”, “Demurity”, such a beautiful word with detailed meaning. I had to look it up online when I saw it trending on tiktok and other socials. The dynamic and comic way in which people have made use of the word amused and fascinated me to carrying out a research on it (trust people on social media to overdo things).

You’ll see videos like:

“See the way I do my makeup, Very demure, very mindful.”

“See the way I eat my chocolate, very demure, very mindful.”

“How to be demure and modest and respectful at work.”

“How to board the plane in a demure and respectful way.”

etc

Looking at the literal meaning of the word “demure" which means the quality of being well behaved, modest, reserved and shy. It’s a word one is more likely to hear in a period drama than everyday conversation (no wonder it’s not commonly used and sounds foreign). However, all thanks to Jools LeBron for making the word famous and now greatly used a lot on Tiktok.

Personally, I like the word as it has a relative meaning which can be applied to behavioural actions and general daily activities. I think it’s something I’ll use often in future. 🤭

Day 5 of 30.
